Learn How to Fly a Drone

Flying a drone is that difficult as everyone perceives or its matter of few hours of practice?

This article is aimed to cover such aspects and controlling a drone

Once you have bought the first quadcopter drone and viewed the contents of the package, you need to follow the instructions which are very easy to understand.

Where to Practice

Basically, the most common drones for experts can be two: the quadcopters which are very common and the nano drones.

In the second case, the control you can fly your nano drone inside a house. Some models could allow you to fly the outdoor but in the absence of rain, wind and other unfavorable climatic conditions.

When trying to learn how to fly a drone, you must carefully choose the place. What are the most important requirements?

  • open space,
  • land free of power lines, current transformers and telephone towers. (Electromagnetic interference can disturb control).
  • rea without trees (if possible) and far from people and animals to avoid injury,
  • free of pedestrian traffic.

The wind is a great enemy when flying, especially when the model is not equipped with GPS stabilization and is overall very light. The space you need to look for should not be small and restricted because an instant blow of wind can push your drone several meters in any possible position!

An optimal control can only be ensured in complete safe places, this is the main key to enjoy flying your quadcopter.

Pre-Flight Checks

We need to carry out a couple of checks that allow us to save time and money because of the spare parts.

Here are a series of points that are worth noting:

  • Check the charge of the drone batteries and the transmitter batteries,
  • Check that the drone’s battery is correctly positioned, tightened and attached,
  • Check that the drone is in perfect condition: each screw must be tight and each free of damage,
  • Verify that the propellers are securely mounted,
  • Check the tips of the propellers. (This point is not taken into great consideration, but once you get to high speeds, it’s a great source of vibration that can cause damage to the motors)
  • Check the functioning of the lights, if any.
  • Set a route with the GPS, if any.
  • In the last but not the least, double check the presence of people or animals.

The Golden Rule

“In the event of a crash, switch off the drone immediately.”

The main rule when flying a drone is to stop the motors in case of a crash. You should develop it as a habit with over the time.

It can happen for any reason: the drone could get caught up in the leaves, in the tall grass or in the trees; it could end up on the sidewalk or it can suddenly fly elsewhere. Not all quadcopters are equipped with ‘ Propeller Guards’, a protection that offers greater security. Propellers are damaged in crash especially at high speed.

Exercise 1: Take-Off, Stabilization, and Landing

After choosing the right place and checking every minimum point listed above, it’s time to fly!

The first exercise that allows you to fly a drone is to take off, stabilize at about 2 meters from the ground level and then land gently.

Exercise 2: Move in Forward & Backward Direction

In the second exercise, we must check that the back of the drone is facing us. To familiarize each part, just remember the lights, which differ in color. (Eg blue led on the front, red on the back).

It is necessary to repeat a part of the previous exercise: take off and stabilize a couple of meters from the ground. At this point, using the right stick, you must pilot the drone sideways, very gently.

Now you have to move everything to the left and right, back and forth. These two exercises are very useful: in addition to the fact that you become familiar with the quadrocopter, you understand the sensitivity of the levers.

It is useful since not all drones are equipped with GPS. A non-stabilized quadcopter could lose altitude at each movement, which is why it is always necessary to check the inclination. The movements must be gentle and light.

Exercise 3: Make Some Turns

It starts as always from the takeoff and a stabilizing two or three meters above from the ground. At this point, you need to return to the starting point. For this purpose, go forward, take right or left turns as you deem suitable and return to the exact starting point.

This practice will enable you to make precise, targeted control and to overcome any kind of obstacle.

Exercise 4: Mastering

As usual, take off, you fly up to two meters in height and stabilize, at this point, you have to rotate the drone so that the back is no longer facing us. Now, just fly to the right or left and make another effort to bring back the back of the drone just like when you take off.

Exercise 5: Landing

The last exercise concerns landing. Lightweight, abrupt or emergency it does not matter: landing is essential every time you fly a drone.

You can define a precise area or place two safety cons. This is useful for increasing the accuracy of landing.

Flying a Drone for Work

Flying a drone is not just limited to the hobby, in fact, it’s an important sector that can radically change some of the activities we do every day. Equipped with cameras or not, they have become really popular to offer job opportunities: let’s go and analyze them.

Discover the various Usage of Drone

What kind of skill/experience is necessary to fly a drone for work?

Skill and experience level can vary from company to company, also based on the tasks that must be performed.
However, the demands in this field are becoming increasingly severe, so all those who start now will have a considerable advantage over all those who start a career with drones in 5 years.

What kind of training do you need?

It depends. To fly a large drone and just for fun, several hours of course and a certificate are sufficient. On the other hand, if the goal is to pursue a career as a UAV systems engineer, you will need proper education in this field.

What is the salary of a drone pilot?

Also in the United States, the salary of a job within the UAV varies considerably. It is generally estimated in the range between $ 50,000 and $ 60,000 per year. The technicians earn more than the pilots, even if everything varies from the employer.

Parcel Delivery

In 2014, Amazon announced a completely innovative way of delivering its packages: in particular, it wants to buy drones to send orders. Amazon itself has posted a job announcement as a drone pilot. The required experience was a minimum of 4 years.

Shooting in the Movies

Drone pilots are entered in the best movie sets: they are cheaper than helicopters and easier to use, even in terms of space. They reach impossible points and are now able to record videos in 4K.

Agriculture Sector

They have immense potential to easily collect crop data every month of the year. They are able to control the humidity, spray the pesticides, identify the presence of diseases, the damage of bad weather and much more.

These flying robots have captured the interest of farmers: Forbes has announced that the legalization of commercial drones will create more than 80 billion dollars. Obviously, they also refer to the creation of new jobs, between 2018 and 2025.
